Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network

Picture
Diagram of LCOGT from July/August 2013 American Scientist.
I'm a staff scientist at LCOGT, where I am the leader of the supernova group.  We have deployed a network of 1-meter and 2-meter telescopes around the world to focus on time-variable astronomy.  This is a new way of doing astronomy, where the network acts as a single facility.  Since it is always dark somewhere, we can make immediate or around the clock observations.  Having many telescopes also guards against weather problems and makes it possible to do big projects.

We've built robotic FLOYDS spectrographs for studying supernovae, on our 2-meter Faulkes telescopes in Hawaii and Australia.  We also built all the 1m telescopes and the cameras on them at our Santa Barbara headquarters.  LCOGT was founded and is primarily funded by Wayne Rosing, former Vice President at Google.
